Side Walk Astronomy with the RASC

The RASC will be at the L.E. Shore library Tuesday July 30th from 1-3pm for their second session of Sidewalk Astronomy. This is a drop in program organized by The Royal Astronmical Society (RASC) The idea of this program is to catch people when they are not expecting to get a look through a telescope, and then explain to them what they are seeing.

Pictures and Words August Teen Competition

Location: L.E.Shore Library.

The Blue Mountains Public Library will be hosting a creative writing and visual art competition, Pictures and Words, for the month of August. What's the criteria? The creative writing must be an original story with a maximum of 1000 words, and story must be submitted with 2 visual pieces of art (please see below for details). 

Deadline for competition will be August 31st and the winner will be selected Tuesday September 3rd. The winner will receive a Cineplex movie pass for two and have the selected piece posted on our Facebook page, website and will also be featured in the BMPL Newsletter! 

You can drop off your entries at The L.E. Shore Library or The Craigleith Heritage Depot or you send them to us via email at libraryprograms@thebluemountains.ca

CONTEST DETAILS:
Writing: One work (max 1,000 words) . Typed entries preferred, but not required.
Visual Art two works. The visual art may be from one of the following categories :

Artwork: 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches preferred. Artwork will be printed in black and white except for front and back cover. You may be required to submit your original artwork if your work is selected for publication.

 Digital Art: High resolution. Minimum 300 dpi.  Black and white artwork only.
 Photographs: High resolution for electronic submissions. Minimum 300dpi.  Black and white photographs only.

Comics: One 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch page maximum.

Observatory Visit

Thursday August 1, 2019

Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm

Location: L.E. Shore Library.

At 7 pm on Thursday the 1st of August, The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) will be at the L.E.Shore Library for an exciting "What's New in Astronomy" presentation. Topics covered will include Exoplanet research, the latest black hole discoveries, and the Parker Solar Probe Mission, which is the first mission to study the sun up close and personal.

The evening will then culminate with a visit to the Carr Observatory (maps provided) for an evening of stargazing, with access to several high power telescopes. Please note that parking at the Observatory is limited and car-pooling is encouraged.

There is no cost for this all-ages event, however pre-registration is required and donations to RASC are greatly appreciated.

Sidewalk Astronomy and Constellation Art

Tuesday August 6th will be the final session of the RASC Side Walk Astronomy program.

Learn how to sit, bend and lift pain-free. Learn effective exercises to improve muscle tone and release tension and pain in the neck, shoulders and low back. This is an experiential workshop so dress in comfortable clothing. We will do the exercises sitting in chairs and standing.
