L.E. Shore Library

Send A Letter To Santa

Saturday December 5, 2020 - Thursday December 10, 2020

Location: The Blue Mountains Public Library.

Write a letter to Santa and drop it in our North Pole Mailbox at the L.E. Shore Library, and the staff there will make sure it gets to Santa at the North Pole.

Here's how to do it:

1. Write a letter to Santa and put it in an envelope addressed to:

Santa Claus
North Pole
H0H 0H0
Canada

2. Bring your letter to the L.E. Shore Library and drop it off at the North Pole Mailbox. (No postage necessary).

That's it!  Each child who mails a letter will receive a personal reply from Santa Claus via Canada Post. Remember to include your full name and mailing address – so Santa knows where to send your letter! If you forget to put your letter in an envelope Santa will write a letter to the library and the staff will be sure to let you know that he still received your letter!

Letter can be dropped off between Tuesday, December 1st, and Thursday, December 10th 2020.

In order to receive a reply by Christmas, please drop off the letter no later than 6pm Thursday, Dec 10th.

Free program. Ages 0 and up.

Winter 2021 is both chilly and socially restricted, but we can still observe the night sky and look through the telescope together. Join local astronomer Ian Wheelband for a virtual tour of the winter skies using a video camera and Zoom.  From under the stars to your warm comfy chair in front of the computer, Ian will use his telescope and video camera to give us a live and full-colour view of the most interesting objects in the winter skies.

We will look at the Orion nebula, the Moon, Uranus and Mars, as well as several other deep sky objects.  Ian will use a planetarium program to show us where the telescope is pointing, give some background information on our objects, and then show you how to find them with the unaided eye or your binoculars.

Then, will all watch together as the telescope moves across the night sky and zeroes in on our celestial targets. If it is cloudy where Ian is located, we will still be able to view "almost live" prerecorded views through the telescope from a few nights earlier.  It will be almost like being there!

Family Astronomy

Thursday March 18, 2021

Time: 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Location: The Blue Mountains Public Library Zoom.

We're going to have a family star party. Join BMPL and  Ian Wheelband from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for a fun-filled virtual night under the  stars from the comfort of your own home. This will be an interactive program, so bring your questions! There will be an engaging  converstion about observing the night sky. Ian will discuss what you might take outside with you in your "Star bag", which is that list of items to make the night a fun event. Ian will move on to family observing projects for our star parties with only the unaided eye, binocular star parties, and small telescope star parties. He will include some suggestions about binoculars and telescopes for the family. There will also be a chat about keeping the night skies dark and a Citizen Science project where your family can be scientists (for real) and contribute real research from your own back yard. The program will close with a short chat about the objects in the night sky for the next month or two, so you can get started planning your very own family star party.

All ages. Pre-Registration required.

You will need a computer or laptop with a web camera, or a tablet or smart phone to participate in this event. Once registered, you will be sent a Zoom Meeting ID and password to attend this program.
