Location: L.E. Shore Library Courtyard.
Join local author Katie Zdybel and hear the inspiration behind her recently-published book of short stories, Equipoise.
A young woman forms her own idea of feminine sexuality while skinny-dipping with her best friend's mother during a thunderstorm. A naive bride returns to her beloved Ontario farm country and, after an encounter with a young female beekeeper, suddenly sees her husband in a sobering new light. Under pretences, a rural doctor returns for her childhood friend, but finds the women in her new life have only a very specific use for her. A middle-aged woman facing the devastating end of a friendship as well as her last chance at childbirth, flees North only to be confronted with the complexities of life in the Yukon.
The women of Equipoise struggle to find their positionality in life in relation to the women around them. They are also contoured by their geographies, caught between North and South, East and West, childhood home and adulthood home. They struggle to maintain a balance within the tension of their opposing female roles, landscapes, friendships, rivalries, victories, and catastrophes, always vigourously seeking equipoise.

Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Location: L.E. Shore Library 173 Bruce St. S..
Join us for an outdoor event featuring local author, Brock Martin, and his recently published book Side Launch. Brock will read from his book, talk about the story behind the story, and will be accompanied by musical guest, Bob Woodcock.
The book is a historical novel about Corvettes - a warship built at the shipyards in Collingwood.
About the novel: In the year 1939, Canada, unprepared but defiant, declares war on Germany and mass-produces a midsize warship, the Corvette. Neither designed nor equipped for the North Atlantic, the Corvette is tasked to take on the predatory sea wolves lurking below the waves. What could go wrong?
- Action-packed historical fiction based on true events of WWII and the battle of the Atlantic.
- The dreaded Wolf Packs, German commandos, a secret mission, spies and saboteurs.
- Heart-breaking wartime romance. Ian and Kate struggle with love in difficult times. Will they find love or be denied?
Ian takes command of the first Corvette built in Canada, the HMCS Collingwood. He is a man deeply scarred, having witnessed Nazi atrocities, and now driven by hatred. He will fight with any weapon he is given. Kate is the daughter of the Collingwood shipyard’s owner, a brilliant woman with a strong desire to make something of herself. She is ready to fight for her country but first she must fight for success in a male-dominated world. Will Kate allow herself to love or is there too much at stake?
Side Launch takes the reader through a roller coaster of real events and dramatic head-to-head clashes, historic confrontation of epic proportions, and love and losses. If you are a fan of history and love to learn, this Canadian historical fiction Author Talk at the Library is for you.

Emily Carr: Art Collage Workshop and Reading
Saturday October 15, 2022
Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm
Location: L.E. Shore Library 173 Bruce St. S..
Everyone is welcome to join us for Exploring The Wildness of Emily Carr.
An Art Collage Workshop and a reading and discussion based on the book: Emily Carr and Raven – In the Darkness of Her Dreams by Cathy Wilson and Ruth MacLean. Join the two authors at L.E. Shore Library on Saturday October 15th at 11am.
The workshop will be in two parts: first a collage workshop led by Ruth MacLean, then readings from the book with questions and answers led by Cathy Wilson. Both parts will be based on the theme of Wildness, and explore how important it was for Emily Carr that she approached her life as a rebel.
Ruth MacLean will briefly demonstrate techniques which she used for making the images in the book. Participants will be encouraged to be bolder than usual, to play around with the emerging shapes in a way that creates a feeling of wildness, or any dynamic that helps to break away from old habits. Participants can work in a free-style way, or they can base their approach on some of Emily’s ‘wildest’ work – scans of Emily’s work will be available for inspiration.
This will be an interactive session with questions and answers. Register online.

Author Talk with Ursula Baker
Saturday November 5, 2022
Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Location: The Gallery at L.E. Shore.
Join local author, Ursula Baker, for an Author Talk about her debut novel, Shades of Betrayal.
Shades of Betrayal follows the fortunes of a compelling cast of characters in Poland, Germany, France, and England. Starting in peacetime, the saga unfolds over the six-year nightmare that ensues after Hitler invades Poland. From the underground soldiers of the Home Army, who surreptitiously defy Hitler in Poland; to the fighters of the French Resistance; to the daring pilots of the RAF; to the dauntless women who engage on countless fronts, these complex people cling to their dreams and yearn for love in the midst of horror. But the evil forces arrayed against them warp their lives, break their hearts, and smash their hopes as one betrayal after the next mounts in all their lives, leading to the ultimate treachery of Poland’s delivery to Stalin’s dictatorship at the war’s end.
Told from a shifting array of fascinating, disparate perspectives, Shades of Betrayal offers a unique view of World War II that deeply explores the personal impact of war and explores the power and beauty of the human spirit and its capacity for love, hope, and healing.
When people think about war, they often envisage only fighting, killing, concentration camps and the misery of the people involved in the war. But despite all of this, life continues, people love, get married, have children. Perhaps the happiness is subdued by the terrible experience of war and the uncertainty of tomorrow but life perseveres. Shades of Betrayal is not a run of the mill WWII story, but rather a different perspective showing the lives of the ordinary people, the soldiers, and the underground resistance fighters during the dark times of war.
