Key Messages Update is published monthly and include items from the Board, Museum Advisory Council (MAC), and the administration. These topics include the highlights and successes of the month, as well as the Board’s perspective on matters of importance. Key Messages for the month are presented under each of the four Strategic Plan Goals.

Vibrant Spaces

  • The Board is pleased to be working with the Town on next steps for the BMPL system expansion.  The first meeting is scheduled for April.

  • The Vibrant Space and Capital Campaign Committee and CEO will be working with TBM Senior Management Team to move forward with the LES expansion and to investigate participation in a multi-use facility in Craigleith.

Organizational Capacity

  • Based on the Strategic Plan 2018 - 2022, the Board is developing an Action Plan to move each goal forward over 2019. The Board has scheduled a planning day in late May to review proposed action items from the committees and finalize the Action Plan for the year. Training needs will also be identified to ensure that we have the skills and knowledge necessary to implement the plans.  While basic orientation on legislation has been completed, this May meeting will focus on achieving a GLAM (gallery, library, archive, museum) service model for the Town.

  • The Board is preparing for its annual policy review in May which includes Board By-Laws, Health and Safety and AODA policies this year.

  • The Museum Advisory Council (MAC) welcome its new members Christine Clark, Robert B. Waind, Rick Rzeplinski, Rob Potter, and Bill Vernon.  This new governance body is appointed through 2022.  Many thanks to the outgoing member who have provided years of service to the museum.

  • The Arts & Culture Council (AAC) welcome its new members Lynn Corrigan, Jenny Dean, Helen Forest, Nicole Gajraj, Liz McCullam, and Beverley Smith.  Many thanks to the outgoing member who have provided years of service to the gallery.

  • After a year of review, consultation with staff, comparisons with other libraries and museums, and external market review; the new job descriptions have been approved and presented to all staff.  These new job descriptions will come into effect on June 1st.

Communications

  • The primary communication of opportunities, programs and services are through the e-newsletter subscription, and website updates.  Community members should subscribe to the BMPL E-newsletter or our blogs for regular updates.

  • The Key Message Update will be released monthly after the board meeting as a highlight of activities and successes.  This, coupled with the e-newsletter, are the primary means of communication by the organization.

Service Excellence

  • BMPL has achieved system accreditation of policies and governance at 99.2% and accreditation of LES branch at 95.2%.  BMPL is a leader in our policies and governance model and is working to continue to grow our new Board’s organizational capacity.

  • The Town has been recognized as a silver-level Youth Friendly Community through the Play Works Youth Friendly Community Recognition Program.  BMPL, with a commitment to youth, was a key partner in this application.  The Youth Friendly application criteria addresses a variety of areas, including programming, facilities, leadership, training, community support, funding, volunteerism, and inclusivity.  BMPL contributed many of their policies, programs, services, and resources as "proofs" for the criteria, and aided in the application receiving a Silver Designation.  A full feedback of the application, along with just how much impact BMPL had on its success, will be provided in May 2019.

  • Pathway & Mary Ward Reel History Film Premiere is May 4th beginning at 6:00pm.  Tickets for this fundraising event are available at LES and CHD.  Funds will be used to develop the next films in the series.
