Pop-Up Seed Library

Thursday January 21, 2021 - Wednesday January 27, 2021

Location: L.E. Shore Library.

Come get some wildflower seeds native to Ontario at the Pop-up Seed Library by eARTh Revival at L.E. Shore Library from January 21st to 27th.

Seeds are free and printed germination guides will be available for you to take home. We recommend that you only take 5 seed packets to ensure there is enough to go around, and to share with freinds if you have more than you need.

Native plants help protect the natural biodiversity of the landscape and support a thriving ecosystem, especially insects and pollinators. Be a land steward by allowing and choosing native plants for your landscape.

A Virtual Evening Under The Stars

Thursday February 11, 2021

Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Location: The Blue Mountains Public Library Zoom.

Winter 2021 is both chilly and socially restricted, but we can still observe the night sky and look through the telescope together. Join local astronomer Ian Wheelband for a virtual tour of the winter skies using a video camera and Zoom.  From under the stars to your warm comfy chair in front of the computer, Ian will use his telescope and video camera to give us a live and full-colour view of the most interesting objects in the winter skies.

We will look at the Orion nebula, the Moon, Uranus and Mars, as well as several other deep sky objects.  Ian will use a planetarium program to show us where the telescope is pointing, give some background information on our objects, and then show you how to find them with the unaided eye or your binoculars.

Then, we will all watch together as the telescope moves across the night sky and zeroes in on our celestial targets. If it is cloudy where Ian is located, we will still be able to view "almost live" pre-recorded views through the telescope from a few nights earlier.  It will be almost like being there!

All Ages. Pre-Registration Required

You will need a computer or laptop with a web camera, or a tablet or smart phone to participate in this event. Once registered, you will be sent a Zoom Meeting ID and password to attend this program.

Family Astronomy

Thursday March 18, 2021

Time: 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Location: The Blue Mountains Public Library Zoom.

We're going to have a family star party. Join BMPL and  Ian Wheelband from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for a fun-filled virtual night under the  stars from the comfort of your own home. This will be an interactive program, so bring your questions! There will be an engaging  conversation about observing the night sky. Ian will discuss what you might take outside with you in your "Star bag", which is that list of items to make the night a fun event. Ian will move on to family observing projects for our star parties with only the unaided eye, binocular star parties, and small telescope star parties. He will include some suggestions about binoculars and telescopes for the family. There will also be a chat about keeping the night skies dark and a Citizen Science project where your family can be scientists (for real) and contribute real research from your own back yard. The program will close with a short chat about the objects in the night sky for the next month or two, so you can get started planning your very own family star party.

All ages. Pre-Registration required.

You will need a computer or laptop with a web camera, or a tablet or smart phone to participate in this event. Once registered, you will be sent a Zoom Meeting ID and password to attend this program.
