Books to Read Before They Hit the Big Screen

Great Adaptations

So many great books are turned into movies and this is turning into a big year for adaptations.  Stay ahead of the curve by reading the book before the movie comes out!  Here is a list of books (featuring Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction, Young Adult, and Children’s Fiction) that can be found in our collection, all of which are being made into movies to be released within the year.  Click on the link to find the book in our catalogue, and place a hold. 

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

This thriller, about a woman who goes missing and the husband she leaves behind, is set to be released in 2014 and will star Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort

A non-fiction book about a man who makes too much money, too fast and the downward spiral that ensues.  The movie is to be released in November 2013 and will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Matthew McConaughey

The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid

A political thriller about a young Pakistani professor who resides in America, and the effect that 9/11 had on his life.  The movie is coming out this year and stars Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, and Kiefer Sutherland.

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

A mystery about a young man with ESP who meets a stranger with a dark secret.  The movie will be out this year and stars Willem Dafoe, Patton Oswalt, 50 Cent, and Anton  Yelchin.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

A teenage girl living in NYC discovers that the city is full of strangers with supernatural powers, who no one can see...except for her because it turns out she might also have powers.  HIts theatres in August 2013 and will star Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Being hailed as the next Hunger Games, this YA read is set in a dystopian future.  The world is divided into factions, and war is on the horizon.  A teenage girl becomes an unlikely hero.  This is going to be a triology.  The movie will be released in March, 2014 and will star Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Speaking of Hunger Games, the sequel is coming to theatres in November 2013 and will star Jennifer Lawrence as the fearless Katniss Everdeen.  A wonderful trilogy for young adults and adults, alike.  The movie will be released in November 2013.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

The second novel in the Percy Jackson series, this is the follow up to The Lightning Thief.  Based on Greek mythology, this childrens' adventure series is very popular with kids.  Coming out in summer 2013, the movie will star Logan Lerman.

The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp

A coming of age novel, features young love between the popular guy and the shy girl.  The book got rave reviews.  The movie is slotted for August 2013 and stars Shailene Woodley.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

One of the best YA books of 2012, this is a heartwrenching tale of unexpected love between two young cancer patients.  This book is an emotinal roller coaster.  The movie has just begun shooting and will be out in 2014, to star Shailene Woodley.

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

A sci-fi classic,a young boy is sent to a military academy to prepare for alien invasion.  The Ender series is very popular.  The film is set to be released in November 2013 and will star Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, and Asa Butterfield as Ender.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

A young boy wakes up and finds himself transported, trapped in a maze with a group of young adults.  None of them how they got there or why they were put there but they all know they must make it through the maze, and all of its dangers, in order to survive.  The movie will be in theatres in November 2013 and will star Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Patricia Clarkson.

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak

Set in World War 2, a young girl takes to stealing books for pleasure and sheltering Jewish refugees.  A very popular book for book clubs, the movie is coming out in January 2014 and stars Sophie Nélisse and Geoffrey Rush.
