Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready Player One has been on my “To-Read” list for years. When I heard that Steven Spielberg was making the movie adaptation, to be released in 2018, I knew that it was time for me to pick this book up and dive in. So glad that I did, as it was one of the best books I have read lately!  If you enjoy 1980s pop culture and video games then this is the book for you.

In the dystopian future of 2044, the world is falling apart. Famine, disease, energy shortages, and crime are all part of people’s day-to-day existence. Low-income populations are forced to move to new cities to find energy and most families live in shanty towns (made up of mobile homes stacked on top of one another.) Humans have retreated into another world, an online network game called the OASIS. OASIS is free for people to join and becomes the virtual world where people work, play, socialize, and go to school in the form of their avatar. The game was created by James Halliday, a genius who idolized 80s popular culture and made it trendy again. Things like Atari, Blade Runner, Family Ties, and Pac Man are all the rage. Before Halliday died, he hid a prize deep in the game and whoever finds this “easter egg” will inherit his company and his entire $240 billion fortune.

There are many people who have based their lives around finding the prize and become professional hunters, who are called gunters. The protagonist of this book is Wade, an isolated young man who becomes a gunter. Wade spends most of this time in the OASIS and he discovers the first major clue of the game. This catches the attention of the world, and Wade must race to find the rest of the clues and reach the prize before an evil corporation, who wants to take over the OASIS, finds it first.

This book is fast-paced, and I became invested in the success of the characters. Wade makes good friends and even meets a love interest, all fellow gunters who are also looking for the prize. They team up as the hunt gets more and more dangerous. Action-packed and suspenseful, I don't want to give any more of the plot away!
