Queen of the Tearling Trilogy by Erika Johansen

Posted: by Emma on December 27, 2016

A brilliant trilogy that has been very popular with Library staff.  We were all counting down to the publication of the last book and it has finally arrived!  These novels centre around a historic utopian-dystopian society and a teenage Queen who is thrust into great power. Kelsea Glynn, heir to the kingdom of Tearling, is taken from her home and raised in solitude by an elderly couple who teach her how to rule as a fair and just Queen. At the age of 19, Kelsea is brought out of hiding to take back her throne, which is currently being occupied by her corrupt Uncle. With the help and loyalty of her Queen’s Guard, along with a set of sapphire necklaces and a stranger named Fletch, Kelsea begins to take on magical powers. Her first act as Queen of the Tearling is to stop the slave trade to neighbouring kingdom, Mortmesne, ruled over by the evil Red Queen.  This act leads to war and Kelsea now has a powerful enemy.

These novels are like fairy tales, with good vs. evil. The Tearling world is set in an unknown time and place, but everything feels medieval. Kelsea’s mysterious magic grows and she is able to slip into visions, intricately bringing in more characters and a greater back story. (Rumour has it that the team behind the Harry Potter movies have already acquired the film rights, and Emma Watson is attached to play Kelsea.)
