Remembering Clarksburg's 2010 Sesquicentennial
Posted: by Madeline on February 5, 2017
With Canada's sesquicentennial this year in mind, Craigleith Heritage Depot staff wish to share a special Virtual Museum of Canada online exhibition about Clarksburg's history with Blue Mountains Public Library patrons.
Did you know that Clarksburg was founded in 1860, or that it celebrated it's 150th birthday - also known as a sesquicentennial - seven years ago in 2010? In celebration of this occassion, past staff of the Craigleith Heritage Depot collected over 300 photographs of memories from Clarksburg's history to create a Virtual Museum of Canada Community Memories online exhibition.
The Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC) is the "largest digital source of stories and experiences shared by Canada's museums and heritage organizations" (quote from website). The VMC's Community Memories project allows anyone with an internet connection to "[e]xplore the stories and treasures, past and present, of communities across Canada" (quote from website).
You may visit the online collection here by clicking this link or copying and pasting it into your browser's URL bar: http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/virtual-exhibits/exhibit/clarksburg-sesquicentennial/
You have the option to click through a slideshow of the amazing photographs one by one, or click on the words "Thumbnail Gallery" at the top right of the collection page once you enter the exhibition. This will allow you to see several photographs at once.
The Clarksburg Sesquicentennial collection is a fantastic example of the lasting impact of a completed local history project brought online by a dedicated group of people. You are welcome to check out the Blue Mountains Public Library's ongoing digital history project "Then & Now" by visiting this website: http://thebluemountainshistory.ca/
