Accessibility

Both facilities of the BMPL have accessibility features.

The L.E. Shore Library has two wheel chair accessible entrances with automatic doors as well as accessible washrooms. L.E. Shore is on one level making it easier to navigate.

The Craigleith Heritage Depot is a historically designated building and therefore has some accessible limitations as an artifact. The entrance is equiped with an automatic door and washrooms are large.

The Blue Mountains Public Library is committed to the independence and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

  1. The BMPL, including the library, museum, gallery and archive shall make every reasonable effort to ensure that services and programs are accessible by:
    1. Encouraging the use of personal assistive devices to access our services and programs;
    2. Encouraging independent use of the facilities, while including a service model which shall assist, with dignity, those who cannot physically access areas or collections of the BMPL;
    3. Encouraging the participation of support persons accompanying people with disabilities and waive fees for support persons assisting users when possible and provide advanced notification when fees are required;
    4. Permitting service animals to assist users and provide alternative accommodation when a service animal is prohibited by law.
  2. The BMPL shall make every effort to communicate with users in a manner that enables the use of services and programs by providing:
    1. Reasonable notification of all interruptions that especially relate to the provision of services and programs for people with disabilities;
    2. The Accessible Customer Service Standard policy and making it available in alternative formats upon request;
    3. A feedback, response and tasking process that enables increased inclusion of users and accessibility to goods and services;
    4. Information on the provision of customer service for people with disabilities and accessible services and programs.

The Library offers a selection of large print books, as well as CD, Playaway and downloadable audio and e-books.

The Library also has a selection of DAISY audio books and partners with the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) to provide additional services for patrons who are print-disabled.

The Craigleith Heritage Depot may provide accessible tours upon request.  We recommend these tours are pre-booked to assure staffing availability.

The Blue Mountains Public Library website is designed for screen reader users.  If you find items are not accessible, we welcome your feedback so we may improve our products.  Most of our documents loaded on this site are PDF reader ready, such as minutes and agendas.  There are also documents which are not functional for screen readers, such as the Year in Review (Annual Reports) and Strategic Plan, both of which are saved as pdf, but are actually graphic inlaid text.  Any documents which are not screen reader ready can be made available in alternate formats.  Please contact the CEO for such documents.
