Volunteers

The volunteer program remains strong at the

Library. Our volunteers assist us with a variety of tasks that help us serve the public more efficiently. Some of the tasks include: processing and shelving books, assisting with children’s programs, delivering books to our homebound patrons, and they keep our magazine collection in order.

A warm thank-you goes out to this dedicated team for all of their tireless work in 2008!

Arts Advisory Council

The Arts Advisory Council is a volunteer body who oversee cultural events at the library.  These committed volunteers are responsible for facilitating art exhibits, and coordinating educational and cultural events at the Library; their work also generates extra funds for the Library.  The library staff and board members would like to thank the members for their hard work.

The Library Board

The Library Board is appointed by Council to represent the interests of the community and to provide governance for the Library.  Library Board members are volunteers who give generously of their time and skills.

What is the Operational Cost of the L.E. Shore Memorial Library?

The net budget for the Library was approximately $555,000 in 2008.  Funding comes from the municipal and provincial taxes, fines and fees, donations and fundraising.  These funds provide you and your family with free books, media, periodicals, and programs; such great value for an entire year of learning, enjoyment, and entertainment!

The Library On-line

You can visit the library on-line, from the comfort of your own home, at www.thebluemountainslibrary.ca.  Since the launch of our new integrated library system, Koha, you can browse the catalogue, reserve and renew books, check out our programs, and access our links to other sources of information via the web.

Community Partners

The Library is a centre for community life and activity.  As such, we have many community partners who work with us to provide you with a wide variety of quality programs and services.

Programs for children and teens would not be possible without the generous contributions made by our community partners and volunteers.  This year community partners, volunteers, and staff made it possible for us to offer more programs to youth aged 13-18 years old, as part of this incentive, in the latter part of 2008 the Library purchased two Wii systems and successfully integrated gaming into our after school programs for both children and youth.

In addition, this past summer we delivered a drop-in program for the youth of the community; this would not have been possible without the generous time given from several youth volunteers.  The evening included music, comic book workshops, refreshments, and social time.

Our on-going programs for children include the Chess Club, the Knitting & Needlework Club, and the Parent/Child Book Club.  Many volunteers, both adult and youth, have helped in facilitating these programs.  Another important program is the Homework Club, which is offered to children in partnership with Beaver Valley Outreach (BVO).

Our Adult Programs are supported by community partners The Beaver Valley Kinettes, who run our very successful Books on Wheels Service.  This service provides books and other materials to our patrons who are physically unable to make it to the library.

We also partnered with local business and the Town to organize the second annual Green Fair. The Green Fair celebrates recognition towards greener living by drawing attention to Green resources in the community and at the Library.

We like our FUN too.

Our second annual Parking Lot Party was held in appreciation of our loyal community. In a gracious gesture to this event, we receive a wide range of support from local business’ and community members, and would like to thank them sincerely for this.

Having said that, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our number one key partnership and support network, The Blue Mountains Staff and Council – we are grateful for your continued support.
